French fashion designer Manfred Thierry Mugler dies aged 73


“We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr. Manfred Thierry Mugler… May his soul rest in peace,” read an announcement posted on his Instagram account.

Fashion brand Hi was among the most influential in the 80s and 90s, when it partnered with names such as Claude Montana and Azzedine Alaïa. Thanks in particular to his shapely costumes, he achieved substantial commercial success during this period. It was during this period that he launched his iconic perfume Angel.

In 2003 Mugler walked away from his brand, which is now owned by L’Oréal, but he caused a stir again with his design for Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala in 2019. In the meantime, a retrospective exhibition of his work has also opened in Montreal. in March 2019. More recently, the exhibition saw a pop-up at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in October 2021.

Mugler’s dramatic vintage designs have also won him a new generation of enthusiasts who have often donned his designs in films, music videos and on the red carpet. Among these, note his creations in the clip of Telephone by singer Lady Gaga. Singer Cardi B has often been spotted wearing her vintage designs on the red carpet. In fact, she checked out her brand name in the song Wild Side.

One of fashion’s true visionaries, Mugler leaves behind a legacy of some of the most remarkable designs to ever grace the runway and beyond.
