Newcastle United are looking to move for a £55million French superstar to transform their squad this summer.
That’s according to a report which suggests the Magpies are looking to build on a side that finished the season strong under Eddie Howe, having already made big strides in last January’s transfer window.
Allan Saint-Maximin has recently been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur – but rather than sell their talismanic left winger, it seems the Tynesiders are more keen on pairing him with another mercurial high-energy Frenchman on the opposite wing.
Diaby was originally at Paris Saint-Germain’s academy and has been tentatively linked with a return to the French capital, while Arsenal and Chelsea have reportedly been interested in the winger’s services – although nothing concrete has not been reported.
The 22-year-old is capable of affecting play on both sides and enjoyed a fine run in the Bundesliga, combining with the likes of Patrik Schick this season to finish third in the German top flight and Champions League this season next, ahead of RB Leipzig. .
Leverkusen may have already linked Diaby’s replacement, recently signing Czech starlet Adam Hlozek under the noses of Liverpool – who were reportedly interested.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are looking to strengthen in several positions, with better attacking options alongside Saint-Maximin, one of Howe’s priorities this summer.
Diaby is valued at just under £50million per transfer market (opens in a new tab).
